About the place

The fortress was built after the Tatar invasion of 1241 and first appears in a document of 1269. In the late 13th century it was the seat of the voivodes of Transylvania, and in 1444 it passed to John Hunyadi. It was recently restored with EU funds: today you walk along the walls, on rebuilt paths and up to viewing platforms.

The cable car has been out of service since November 2025; in September 2026 the town hall hoped to restart it by spring 2027. Meanwhile electric minibuses run from the cable-car car park to Gate 1 daily from 9 am to 6 pm, 3 lei a ride, in about 5 minutes. You can also walk up one of the three marked trails on the hill. The hill is a 30-hectare nature reserve, home to the nose-horned viper.

Good to know

  • Check whether the cable car has restarted; otherwise take the electric minibus from the cable-car car park.
  • Stay on the paths: there are vipers on the hill, and warning signs inside the fortress.
  • Go up towards evening for the light over the town and the Mureș valley.
