It is one of the few medieval Orthodox churches built in a Transylvanian town, and keeps its 1654 paintings and iconostasis.
About the place
The old part of the church combines a Greek-cross plan, with a dome on four columns, and a Gothic apse. The narthex was probably added in 1634, and the four-level tower with its wooden gallery in 1827. A Slavonic inscription above the door says the church was rebuilt in 1634 and painted in 1654.
The murals are by the painters Constantin and Stan, and the iconostasis dates from the same year. The church also keeps two icons, St Nicholas and the Virgin with Child, brought in 1762 from Plosca monastery after the Austrians destroyed it. The church stands in the town's old cemetery.
